The importance of healthy eating habits

A nutritious, well-balanced diet is the cornerstone of good health.  While consuming the correct amount of calories will help you achieve/maintain your ideal weight consuming the right type of calories will help you feel your best both mentally and physically. The average daily calorie needs for males is 2500 calories and 2000 calories for females. To allow for weight loss you will need to create a deficit of approximately 500 calories by choosing healthy foods and being physically active.

Avoid the snack trap

To feel happy and wholesome, we recommend a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and proteins, while limiting foods that can bring your mood down, such as sugar, caffeine and alcohol. These can cause a quick spike in blood sugar levels, which drop just as rapidly leaving you feeling run down and lacking energy. Leading to a run-down feeling when the body is putting everything at work to bring blood sugar levels down.

Eating Breakfast

Studies show that making breakfast a daily habit can help you lose weight- and keep it off. Also, taking time to enjoy a meal in the morning will help your body and brain function more effectively throughout the day. And if that’s not enough of a reason to start your day fully charged, breakfast has also been linked to increased happiness and lower stress levels

A Variety of proteins

Protein is needed by your body for growth and repair, the maintenance of good health and consuming a balanced diet that includes healthy sources of proteins can help control your weight.

Protein rich foods have been linked to a feeling of fullness, so including a range of lean sources of protein in your diet could help minimise hunger and reduces total energy intake.

Animal sources of protein contain all essential amino acids required by adults and include meat, fish, eggs, milk and cheese. Remember to choose lean options as some of these options can be high in saturated fats. Beans, peas and lentils are great alternatives to animal sources of protein as they are high in fibre and lower in fat.
